O Terciário não é mais reconhecido como uma unidade formal pela Comissão Internacional de Estratigrafia, sendo a sua extensão tradicional dividida entre os Períodos de Paleogene e Neogene e a primeira etapa do Pleistoceno da Era Cenozóica. O período começou com o desaparecimento dos dinossauros não-aviários no evento de extinção do Cretáceo-Paleogene, no início da Era Cenozóica, e abrangeu o início da glaciação quaternária no final da época do Plioceno. O Terciário também incluiu o início do Pleistoceno.
