Abstracția este un proces prin care conceptele sunt derivate din utilizarea și clasificarea conceptelor literale, a primelor principii sau a altor metode. "O abstracție" este produsul acestui proces - un concept care acționează ca un substantiv super-categoric pentru toate conceptele subordonate și conectează orice concepte înrudite ca grup, domeniu sau categorie. Abstractizările pot fi formate prin reducerea conținutului informațional al unui concept sau al unui fenomen observabil, în mod tipic păstrând doar informațiile relevante pentru un anumit scop. De exemplu, abstractizarea unei mingi de fotbal din piele pentru ideea mai generală a unei mingi păstrează numai informațiile despre atributele și comportamentul mingii generale, eliminând celelalte caracteristici ale respectivei mingi.
