Accent (fonetică)
Accentul este aspectul fonetic acordat unei anumite silabe într-un cuvânt sau unui anumit cuvânt dintr-o frază. Atunci când această proeminență este produsă printr-o forță dinamică mai mare, semnalizată de obicei printr-o combinație de lungime amplitudine, silabă sau vocală, articularea completă a vocalei și o schimbare nesemnificativă în pitch, rezultatul este numit accent de stres, accent dinamic sau pur și simplu stres; când este produsă numai prin pitch, se numește accent de pitch; iar atunci când este produs numai prin lungime, se numește accent cantitativ. Engleza are accent de stres. O silabă proeminentă sau cuvânt se spune că este accentuată sau tonică; ultimul termen nu implică faptul că acesta poartă ton fonemic. Alte silabe sau cuvinte sunt considerate a fi neautorizate sau atonice. Silabele sunt adesea declarate a fi în poziție pretonică sau post-tonică; anumite norme fonologice se aplică în mod specific acestor poziții. De exemplu, în limba engleză americană, / t / și / d / sunt înclinate în poziție post-tonică.
