Epitet
Un epitet este un nume, sau un termen descriptiv, care însoțește sau apare în locul unui nume și care a intrat în uz comun. Poate fi descrisă ca porecla glorificată. El are diferite nuanțe de semnificație atunci când este aplicat oamenilor aparent reali sau fictivi, divinități, obiecte și nomenclatură binomică. Poate fi și un titlu descriptiv: de exemplu, Alexandru cel Mare sau Suleiman Magnificul. În uzul contemporan, epitetul se referă adesea la o frază abuzivă, defăimatoare sau deranjantă, cum ar fi un epitet rasial. Utilizarea mai puțin ofensatoare este criticată de Martin Manser și alți lingviști prescriptivi.
