Coevoluția
În biologie, coevoluția este "schimbarea unui obiect biologic declanșat de schimbarea unui obiect înrudit". Coevoluția poate apărea la multe niveluri biologice: poate fi la fel de microscopică ca și mutațiile corelate între aminoacizii într-o proteină sau macroscopică ca trăsăturile covârșitoare între diferite specii într-un mediu. Fiecare parte într-o relație coevolutivă exercită presiuni selective asupra celeilalte părți, afectând astfel evoluția celeilalte. Coevoluția diferitelor specii include evoluția unei specii gazdă și a paraziților săi, precum și exemple de evoluție reciprocă în timp. Evoluția ca răspuns la factorii abiotici, cum ar fi schimbările climatice, nu este coevoluția biologică. Concluzia generală este că coevoluția poate fi responsabilă pentru o mare parte a diversității genetice observate la populațiile normale, inclusiv: polimorfismul plasmei sanguine, polimorfismul proteic, sistemele de histocompatibilitate etc. Există puține dovezi ale coevoluției care determină schimbări pe scară largă în istoria Pământului, factori precum dispariția în masă și extinderea în spațiul ecologic par să orienteze schimbările din abundența grupurilor majore.
