Contingență (filozofie)
În filosofie și logică, contingența este starea propozițiilor care nu sunt nici adevărate sub orice evaluare posibilă, nici false sub orice evaluare posibilă. O propoziție contingentă nu este nici neapărat adevărată, nici neapărat falsă. Propunerile care sunt contingente ar putea fi așa deoarece conțin conectori logici care, împreună cu valoarea adevărului oricărei părți atomice, determină valoarea adevărului propoziției. Aceasta înseamnă că valoarea adevărului propoziției depinde de valorile de adevăr ale fraelor care o compun. Propozițiile contingente depind de fapte, în timp ce propunerile analitice sunt adevărate fără a se lua în considerare faptele despre care vorbesc. Pe lângă propunerile contingente, există cel puțin alte trei clase de propoziții, dintre care unele se suprapun: ▪ Propoziții tautologice, care trebuie să fie adevărate, indiferent de circumstanțele care sunt sau ar putea fi. ▪ Contradicții care trebuie neapărat să fie false, indiferent de circumstanțele care sunt sau ar putea fi. ▪ Posibile propoziții, care sunt adevărate sau ar fi putut fi adevărate în anumite circumstanțe.
