Cotillion este un tip de dans social modelat care a luat naștere în Franța în secolul al XVIII-lea. Acesta a fost inițial alcătuit din patru cupluri într-o formație pătrată, precursorul cvadrilei; în Statele Unite, dansul pătrat, unde "cifrele" sunt chemați cu voce tare de către apelant, este o formă de contredanse rurală care a coborât și din cotillionul urban. Numele său, din cotillon francez, "petticoat", a reflectat flash-ul de petticoats, pe măsură ce partenerii schimbători s-au întors.
