Energie
În fizică, energia este o proprietate a obiectelor, transferabile între ele prin interacțiuni fundamentale, care pot fi transformate în formă, dar nu create sau distruse. Joule-ul este unitatea de energie SI, bazată pe cantitatea transferată unui obiect prin lucrul mecanic de mutare cu 1 metru față de o forță de 1 newton. Munca și căldura sunt două categorii de procese sau mecanisme care pot transfera o anumită cantitate de energie. A doua lege a termodinamicii limitează cantitatea de muncă care poate fi realizată de energia obținută printr-un proces de încălzire - o anumită energie este întotdeauna pierdută ca căldură reziduală. Suma maximă care poate intra în activitate se numește energia disponibilă. Sistemele, cum ar fi mașinile și lucrurile vii, necesită adesea energie disponibilă, nu doar energie. Formele mecanice și alte forme de energie pot fi transformate în direcția opusă în energie termică fără astfel de limitări.
