Eufemism
Un eufemism este un cuvânt sau o expresie general inofensivă folosită în locul celei care poate fi găsită ofensatoare sau sugerează ceva neplăcut. Unele eufemisme intenționează să amuze; în timp ce alții folosesc termeni blandi, inofensivi și adesea înșelătoare pentru lucrurile pe care utilizatorul dorește să le disimuleze sau să le redreseze. Eufemismele sunt folosite pentru disimulare, pentru a se referi la subiectele tabu într-un mod politicos și pentru a masca profanitatea. Opusul eufemismului este aproape egal cu disfemismul. Eufemismele pot fi folosite pentru a evita cuvintele considerate nepoliticoase, în timp ce încă le transmite sensul lor; cuvintele pot fi înlocuite cu cuvinte asemănătoare, cu cuvinte mai blânde sau cu substituenți. Unele eufemisme au devenit acceptate în anumite societăți pentru informații incomode; de exemplu, în multe țări vorbite în limba engleză, un doctor este de natură să spună "pacientul a decedat" mai degrabă decât "pacientul a murit". Un al doilea exemplu care se referă la informația incomodă și la ascunderea unui anumit grad de adevăr ar fi "să punem câinele la culcare", mai degrabă decât "l-am omorât pe câine". Eufemismele pot fi folosite pentru a submina sau a ascunde fapte nepăpasabile, cum ar fi "daune colaterale" pentru "victime civile" în context militar sau "redactate" pentru "cenzură".
