Proprietățile fizice ale materialelor și sistemelor sunt adesea descrise ca proprietăți intensive și extinse. Această clasificare se referă la dependența proprietăților de mărimea sau amploarea sistemului sau a obiectului în cauză. Distincția se bazează pe conceptul că se pot identifica subdiviziuni identice mai mici, care nu interacționează, astfel încât proprietatea interesată să se schimbe sau să nu se modifice atunci când sistemul este împărțit sau combinat.
