În fizică, un fluid este o substanță care se deformează continuu sub o forță de forfecare aplicată. Fluidele sunt un subset al fazei materiei și includ lichide, gaze, plasme și, într-o oarecare măsură, solide din plastic. Deși termenul "fluid" include atât fazele lichid, cât și gazele, în uz comun, "lichidul" este adesea folosit ca sinonim pentru "lichid", fără implicații că gazul ar putea fi, de asemenea, prezent. De exemplu, "lichid de frână" este uleiul hidraulic și nu va îndeplini funcția necesară dacă există gaz în el.
