Cuvântul geek este un termen de slang folosit inițial pentru a descrie persoanele excentrice sau non-mainstream; în uz curent, cuvântul înseamnă, de obicei, un expert sau un entuziast sau o persoană obsedată de un hobby sau o urmărire intelectuală, cu o semnificație generală pejorativă a unei "persoane deosebite sau deloc dislicebile, adică cel care este perceput a fi prea intelectual".
