În biologie, un gen / dʒiːnəs / este un rang taxonomic folosit în clasificarea biologică a organismelor vii și fosile. În ierarhia clasificării biologice, genul vine deasupra speciilor și sub familie. În nomenclatorul binomial, numele genului formează prima parte a denumirii binomiale a speciei pentru fiecare specie din genul respectiv. de exemplu, Pongo pygmaeus și Pongo abelii sunt două specii din genul Pongo. Pongo este un gen din familia Hominidae. Compoziția unui gen este determinată de un taxonomist.
