O graphema este cea mai mică unitate distinctă semantic într-o limbă scrisă, analogă cu fonemele limbilor vorbite. Un grafem poate sau nu poate purta semnificație de la sine și poate sau nu poate corespunde unui singur fonem. Grafemurile includ litere alfabetice, ligaturi tipografice, caractere chinezești, cifre numerice, semne de punctuație și alte simboluri individuale ale oricărui sistem de scriere din lume. Cuvântul grafem este derivat din grecul γράφω gráphō, iar sufixul -eme, prin analogie cu fonemul și alte nume de unități emice. Studiul grafemelor se numește grafemie. O grafem este un concept abstract, similar cu un personaj în calcul. Un glif este o formă specifică care reprezintă grafulul, într-un anumit tip de text. De exemplu, conceptul abstract al "numărului arabic" este un grafem care ar avea două glife diferite în fonturile Times New Roman și Helvetica.
