Tulburare congenitală
O tulburare congenitală sau boală congenitală este o afecțiune care există la naștere și adesea înainte de naștere sau care se dezvoltă în prima lună de viață, indiferent de cauzalitate. Dintre aceste boli, cele caracterizate prin deformări structurale sunt denumite "anomalii congenitale" și implică defecte sau deteriorări ale fătului în curs de dezvoltare. O tulburare congenitală poate fi rezultatul anomaliilor genetice, a mediului intrauterin, a erorilor de morfogeneză, a infecției sau a unei anomalii cromozomiale. Rezultatul tulburării va depinde de interacțiunile complexe dintre deficitul prenatal și mediul postnatal. Studiile pe animale arată că dieta mamei, consumul de vitamine și nivelurile de glucoză înainte de ovulație și de concepție au efecte pe termen lung asupra creșterii fetale și asupra bolilor adolescente și adulte. Tulburările congenitale variază foarte mult în ceea ce privește cauzalitatea și anomaliile. Orice substanță care provoacă defecte congenitale este cunoscută ca un teratogen. Unele tulburări pot fi detectate înainte de naștere prin diagnostic prenatal. Termenul tulburare "congenitală" nu se referă neapărat la o tulburare genetică, în ciuda asemănării cuvintelor.
