Mead este o băutură alcoolică creată prin fermentarea mierei cu apă și adesea fructe, mirodenii, boabe sau hamei. Conținutul alcoolic al miedului poate varia de la aproximativ 8% ABV la mai mult de 20%. Caracteristica definitorie a miei este că majoritatea zahărului fermentabil al băuturii este derivat din miere. Poate fi încă carbonat sau spumant natural și poate fi uscat, semi-dulce sau dulce. Mead este cunoscut din multe surse ale istoriei antice din Europa, Africa și Asia. "Poate fi considerat strămoșul tuturor băuturilor fermentate", a speculat Maguelonne Toussaint-Samat, "antedând cultivarea solului". Hornsey consideră dovezi arheologice despre aceasta ambiguă, totuși McGovern și alți chimici arheologici consideră că prezența marcatorilor de ceară de albine și a acidului gluconic, în prezența altor substanțe cunoscute a fi fermentate, constituie dovada rezonabilă a utilizării mierei în băuturile vechi fermentate. Claude Lévi-Strauss face un caz pentru inventarea miei ca marker al pasajului "de la natura la cultură". Mead a jucat un rol important în credințele și mitologia unor popoare.
