Topirea este un proces fizic care are ca rezultat trecerea de fază a unei substanțe de la un solid la altul. Energia internă a unei substanțe este crescută, de obicei prin aplicarea căldurii sau a presiunii, rezultând o creștere a temperaturii sale până la punctul de topire, la care ordonarea entităților ionice sau moleculare din solid se descompune într-o stare mai puțin ordonată și solidul lichefiază. Un obiect care sa topit complet este topit. Substanțele în stare topită au în general o viscozitate redusă cu o temperatură ridicată; o excepție de la această maximă este elementul sulf, a cărui vâscozitate crește până la un punct datorat polimerizării și apoi scade cu temperaturi mai ridicate în starea sa topită. Unii compuși organici se topesc prin mezofaze, stări de ordin parțial între solid și lichid.
