Multitudine
Multitudinea este un termen pentru un grup de oameni care nu pot fi clasificați în nici o altă categorie distinctă, cu excepția faptului că au fost împărtășiți existența. Termenul are o istorie de utilizare ajungând înapoi la antichitate, dar a preluat un concept strict politic atunci când a fost folosit pentru prima dată de Machiavelli și reiterat de Spinoza. Multitudinea este un concept al unei populații care nu a intrat într-un contract social cu un corp politic suveran, astfel încât indivizii să-și păstreze capacitatea de autodeterminare politică. Pentru Hobbes, mulțimea era o grămadă care trebuia să încheie un contract social cu un monarh, transformându-i astfel dintr-o mulțime într-un popor. Pentru Machiavelli și Spinoza ambele, rolul mulțimii se învârte între admirație și dispreț. Recent, termenul a revenit la proeminență ca pe un nou model de rezistență împotriva sistemelor mondiale de putere, descris de teoreticienii politici Michael Hardt și Antonio Negri în Imperiul lor internațional de best-seller și extins în Multitudinea lor: Războiul și Democrația în Epoca Imperiului .
