În muzică, notiunea de termen are două semnificații primare: ▪ Un semn folosit în notația muzicală pentru a reprezenta durata și intensitatea relativă a sunetului; ▪ Un sunet înclinat în sine. Notele sunt "atomii" multor muzici occidentale: discretizări ale fenomenelor muzicale care facilitează performanța, înțelegerea și analiza. Termenul de notă poate fi folosit atât în sensuri generice, cât și în cele specifice: se poate spune fie "piesa" La mulți ani pentru tine "începe cu două note având același pas" sau "piesa începe cu două repetări ale aceleiași note". În primul caz, se utilizează nota pentru a se referi la un anumit eveniment muzical; în cel de-al doilea, se utilizează termenul pentru a se referi la o clasă de evenimente care au aceeași pantă.
