O nuci este definită botanic ca un fruct compus dintr-o coajă tare și o sămânță, în care coaja nu se deschide pentru a elibera semințele. Într-un context culinar, o mare varietate de semințe uscate sunt adesea numite nuci, dar într-un context botanic, numai cele care includ fructele indeziente sunt considerate nuci adevărate. Traducerea "nucilor" în anumite limbi necesită frecvent parafrazi, deoarece cuvântul este ambiguu. Cele mai multe semințe provin din fructe care se eliberează în mod natural de coajă, spre deosebire de nucile cum ar fi alune, castane și ghinde, care au pereți groși și provin dintr-un ovarian compus.
