În știința materialelor, uzura este eroziunea sau deplasarea laterală a materialului din poziția lui "derivată" și originală pe o suprafață solidă realizată de acțiunea unei alte suprafețe. Uzura este legată de interacțiunile dintre suprafețe și îndeosebi îndepărtarea și deformarea materialului pe o suprafață ca rezultat al acțiunii mecanice a suprafeței opuse. Nevoia de mișcare relativă între două suprafețe și contactul mecanic inițial între asperități este o diferență importantă între uzura mecanică în comparație cu alte procese cu rezultate similare. Definiția uzurii poate include pierderea dimensiunilor datorate deformării plastice, dacă aceasta are originea la interfața dintre două suprafețe alunecoase. Cu toate acestea, deformarea plastică, cum ar fi tensiunea la încovoiere, este exclusă din definiția uzurii dacă nu încorporează o mișcare de alunecare relativă și contactul cu o altă suprafață, în ciuda posibilității de îndepărtare a materialului, deoarece acesta nu are în vedere acțiunea de alunecare relativă a unei alte suprafețe. Rezistența la uzură este în realitate o mișcare scurtă de alunecare în care două corpuri solide interacționează într-un interval de timp extrem de scurt.
