Un postil sau postilla era inițial un termen pentru comentariile biblice. Este derivat din latina "post illa verba textus", referindu-se la citirile biblice. Cuvântul apare mai întâi în cronica lui Nicolas Trivetus, dar mai târziu a ajuns să însemne doar o expunere homiletică și, astfel, a devenit sinonim cu homila în deosebire față de predica tematică. În cele din urmă, după mijlocul secolului al XIV-lea, a fost aplicată unui ciclu anual de homilii.

A postil or postilla was originally a term for Bible commentaries. It is derived from the Latin "post illa verba textus", referring to Biblical readings. The word first occurs in the chronicle of Nicolas Trivetus, but later it came to mean only homiletic exposition, and thus became synonymous with homily in distinction from the thematic sermon. Finally, after the middle of the fourteenth century, it was applied to an annual cycle of homilies.
