Prefix
Un prefix este o aplicație care este plasată înaintea tulpinii unui cuvânt. Adăugarea acesteia la începutul unui singur cuvânt o schimbă într-un alt cuvânt. De exemplu, atunci când prefixul un- este adăugat la cuvântul fericit, acesta creează cuvântul nefericit. În special în studiul limbilor, un prefix este de asemenea numit preformativ, deoarece modifică forma cuvintelor la care este aplicat. Prefixele, ca și alte aplicații, pot fi fie inflexionale, schimbând categoria sintactică, fie derivată, schimbând fie categoria lexicală, fie sensul semantic. În limba engleză, nu există prefixe inflexionale. Prefixele, ca toate celelalte aplicații, sunt legate de morfeme. Prefixul cuvântului este alcătuit în sine din fixarea tulpinii și prefixul pre-, ambele fiind derivate din rădăcinile latine.
