Probabilitatea este o măsură a probabilității ca un eveniment să se producă. Probabilitatea este folosită pentru a cuantifica o atitudine a minții față de o anumită propoziție a cărui adevăr nu suntem siguri. Propunerea de interes este de obicei sub forma "Va apare un eveniment specific?" Atitudinea minții este de forma "Cât de sigur suntem că evenimentul va avea loc?" Siguranța pe care o adoptăm poate fi descrisă în termeni de măsură numerică și acest număr, între 0 și 1, numim probabilitate. Astfel, cu cât este mai mare probabilitatea unui eveniment, cu atât mai sigur suntem că evenimentul va avea loc. Un exemplu simplu ar fi aruncarea unei monede echitabile.
