Clasament
Un clasament este o relație între un set de elemente, astfel încât, pentru oricare dintre cele două elemente, primul este fie "clasat mai sus decât", "clasat mai jos" sau "clasat pe cel de-al doilea". În matematică, aceasta este cunoscută sub numele de ordine slabă sau preordonare totală a obiectelor. Nu este neapărat o ordine totală de obiecte, deoarece două obiecte diferite pot avea același rang. Clasamentul în sine este ordonat în totalitate. De exemplu, materialele sunt în totalitate preordonate prin duritate, în timp ce gradele de duritate sunt ordonate total. Prin reducerea măsurilor detaliate la o serie de numere ordonate, clasamentele fac posibilă evaluarea informațiilor complexe în funcție de anumite criterii. Astfel, de exemplu, un motor de căutare pe Internet poate clasifica paginile pe care le găsește în funcție de o estimare a relevanței acestora, făcând astfel posibil ca utilizatorul să selecteze rapid paginile pe care probabil vor dori să le vadă. Analiza datelor obținute prin clasificare necesită în mod obișnuit statistici non-parametrice.
