În mitologia greacă, un satyr este unul din trupele de tovarăși de Pan și Dionysus, cu trăsături asemănătoare caprei, incluzând o coadă de capră, urechi de capră și, uneori, un falus asemănător caprei. În mitologia romană există un concept similar cu caracteristicile de capră, faunul fiind jumătate om, jumătate capră. Vorbind în limba greacă, românii folosesc adesea termenul grecesc saturos când se referă la faunul latin și, în cele din urmă, au sincretizat cele două.
