Un alfabet este un set standard de litere care este folosit pentru a scrie una sau mai multe limbi pe baza principiului general că literele reprezintă foneme ale limbii vorbite. Acest lucru este în contrast cu alte tipuri de sisteme de scriere, cum ar fi syllabarii și logografiile. Un alfabet adevărat are litere pentru vocalele unei limbi, precum și a consoanelor.
