Al 16-lea secol
Secolul al XVI-lea începe cu anul Iulian 1501 și se încheie fie cu anul Iulian, fie cu anul gregorian 1600. Este considerat de istorici ca fiind secolul în care a apărut apusul Occidentului. În timpul secolului al XVI-lea, Spania și Portugalia au explorat mările lumii și au deschis rute comerciale oceanice la nivel mondial. Partea mare a Lumii Noi a devenit colonii spaniole și portugheze, iar în timp ce portughezii au devenit maeștrii comerțului Asia-Africa cu Oceanul Indian, spaniolul a deschis comerțul în Oceanul Pacific, legând America de Asia. În Europa, Reforma protestantă a dat o lovitură majoră autorității papalității și Bisericii Romano-Catolice. Politica europeană a devenit dominată de conflicte religioase, cu baza pentru războiul de treizeci de ani care a fost pus la cale către sfârșitul secolului. În Orientul Mijlociu, Imperiul Otoman a continuat să se extindă, în timp ce sultanul a luat titlul de Calif, în timp ce avea de-a face cu o Persia învârstătoare. Iranul și Irakul au fost prinse de popularitatea majoră a sectei și-ite a islamului, o dată-obscură, sub conducerea dinastiei Safavid a misticilor războinici, oferind motive pentru o Persie independentă de lumea musulmană majoritară-sunniană.
