Somatic
Termenul somatic înseamnă "a corpului" - referitor la corpul distinct de minte, suflet sau spirit. În medicină, boala somatică este o boală corporală, nu mentală. Termenul este adesea folosit în biologie pentru a se referi la celulele corpului, spre deosebire de celulele de linie germinativă care de obicei dau naștere la gameți. Aceste celule somatice sunt diploide care conțin două copii ale fiecărui cromozom, în timp ce celulele germinative sunt haploide deoarece conțin doar o copie a fiecărui cromozom. Deși în condiții normale toate celulele somatice dintr-un organism conțin ADN identic, ele dezvoltă o varietate de caracteristici specifice țesutului. Acest proces se numește diferențiere, prin modificări epigenetice și de reglementare. Gruparea de celule și țesuturi similare creează fundația pentru organe. Mutațiile somatice sunt schimbări ale geneticii unui organism multicelulare care nu sunt transmise puilor prin linia germinală. Multe tipuri de cancer sunt mutații somatice. Somaticul este, de asemenea, definit ca referindu-se la peretele cavității corpului, în special ca distinct față de cap, membre sau viscere.
