Extorcarea este o infracțiune penală pentru obținerea de bani, bunuri sau servicii de la o persoană, entitate sau instituție, prin constrângere. Abținerea de a face rău este uneori numită eufemistică protecție. Extorcarea este practicată în mod obișnuit de grupurile de crimă organizată. Nu este necesară obținerea reală de bani sau de proprietate pentru a săvârși infracțiunea. Efectuarea unei amenințări de violență care se referă la o cerință de plată a banilor sau a unei proprietăți pentru a opri viitoarea violență este suficientă pentru a comite infracțiunea. Exacțiunea se referă nu numai la extorcare sau la solicitarea și obținerea ilegală a ceva prin forță, dar în plus, în definiția sa formală, înseamnă a provoca ceva precum durerea și suferința sau a face pe cineva să îndure ceva neplăcut. Extorcarea se distinge de jaf. În jaf, fie că este înarmat sau nu, infractorul ia proprietatea victimei prin folosirea imediată a forței sau a temerii că forța va fi utilizată imediat. Extorcarea, care nu se limitează la preluarea proprietății, implică instilația verbală sau scrisă a temerii că ceva se va întâmpla victimei dacă nu respectă voința extortionistului.
