Noțiunea de linie sau linie dreaptă a fost introdusă de matematicienii antice pentru a reprezenta obiecte drepte cu lățime și adâncime neglijabilă. Linile sunt o idealizare a unor astfel de obiecte. Până în secolul al XVII-lea liniile au fost definite astfel: "Linia este prima specie de cantitate, care are o singură dimensiune, și anume lungime, fără nici o lățime sau adâncime, și nu este altceva decât fluxul sau curgerea punctului care va se lasă de la imaginarul său în mișcare un vestigiu în lungime, scutit de orice lățime Linia dreaptă este aceea care se extinde la fel între punctele sale "Euclid a descris o linie ca" lungime fără lățime "și a introdus câteva postulate ca proprietăți de bază nedovedite din care a construit geometria, care acum este numită geometrie euclidiană pentru a evita confuzia cu alte geometrii introduse de la sfârșitul secolului al XIX-lea. În matematica modernă, având în vedere multitudinea de geometrii, conceptul unei linii este strâns legat de modul în care este descrisă geometria.
