O superputere este un stat cu o poziție dominantă în relațiile internaționale și se caracterizează prin capacitatea ei de neegalat de a exercita influență sau putere de proiect la scară globală. Acest lucru se realizează atât prin puterea militară, cât și prin cea economică, precum și prin influența puterii diplomatice și a soft-ului. În mod tradițional, superputerile sunt preeminente printre marile puteri. Termenul a fost aplicat pentru Imperiul Britanic, Statele Unite și Uniunea Sovietică. Cu toate acestea, după cel de-al doilea război mondial și criza din Suez în 1956, statutul de imperiu britanic ca superputere a fost mult diminuat; pentru timpul războiului rece, Statele Unite și Uniunea Sovietică au devenit, în general, considerate cele două superputeri rămase, dominând afacerile mondiale.
