Theravada
Theravāda este cea mai veche ramură supraviețuitoare a budismului. Cuvântul derivă din sanscrita sthaviravada și înseamnă literal "învățătura bătrânilor". Este relativ conservator și, conform Dr. Rupert Gethin, este mai aproape de buddhismul timpuriu decât alte tradiții budiste existente.
