Thymus
Timusul este un organ specializat al sistemului imunitar. În timus, celulele T, critice pentru sistemul imunitar adaptiv, mature. Fiecare celulă T atacă o substanță străină pe care o identifică cu receptorul său. Celulele T au receptori care sunt generați prin amestecarea aleatorie a segmentelor genei. Fiecare celulă T atacă un antigen diferit. Celulele T care atacă propriile proteine ale organismului sunt eliminate în timus. Celulele epiteliale din celulele tumorale exprimă proteine importante din alte părți ale corpului. Mai întâi, celulele T suferă o "selecție pozitivă" prin care celulele intră în contact cu auto-MHC exprimat de celulele epiteliale timice; cei care nu au interacțiune sunt distruși. În al doilea rând, celula T suferă o "selecție negativă" prin interacțiunea cu celula dendritică timică, prin care celulele T cu interacțiune cu afinitate ridicată sunt eliminate prin apoptoză, iar cei cu afinitate intermediară supraviețuiesc. Timusul este compus din doi lobi identici și este situat anatomic în mediastinul anterior superior, în fața inimii și în spatele sternului. Din punct de vedere histologic, fiecare lob de timus poate fi împărțit într-o medulă centrală și un cortex periferic care este înconjurat de o capsulă exterioară.
