Glanda tiroida
Glanda tiroidă sau, pur și simplu, tiroidă / θaɪərɔɪd /, în anatomia vertebratelor, este una dintre cele mai mari glande endocrine și constă din doi lobi conectați. Glanda tiroidă se găsește în gât, sub cartilajul tiroidian (care formează proeminența laringiană sau "mărul lui Adam"). Glanda tiroidă controlează cât de repede organismul folosește energie, face proteine și controlează cât de sensibil este corpul față de alți hormoni. Participă la aceste procese prin producerea hormonilor tiroidieni, principalele fiind triiodotironina (T3) și tiroxina (uneori denumită tetraiodothyronină (T4)). Acești hormoni reglează creșterea și rata de funcționare a multor alte sisteme din organism. T3 și T4 sunt sintetizate din iod și tirozină. Tiroida produce, de asemenea, calcitonină, care joacă un rol în homeostazia de calciu. Producția hormonală din tiroidă este reglată de hormonul stimulativ al tiroidei (TSH) produs de hipofiza anterioară, care este reglementată de hormonul eliberator al tireotropinei (TRH) produs de hipotalamus.
