Prima definiție a tranzitivului în dicționar denotă apariția unui verb atunci când acesta necesită un obiect direct sau care denotă un verb care, în mod obișnuit, necesită un obiect direct. O altă definiție a tranzitivului denotă un adjectiv, cum ar fi fondul sau un substantiv, cum ar fi soțul, care necesită o expresie de substantiv și nu poate fi folosit fără o referire implicită sau explicită la o astfel de expresie de substantiv. De asemenea, Transitive are proprietatea că dacă un obiect are o relație cu un al doilea obiect care are aceeași relație cu un al treilea obiect, atunci primul obiect poartă această relație cu cel de-al treilea obiect.
