În biologia moleculară, transversia se referă la substituția unei purine pentru o pirimidină sau invers. Ea poate fi inversată numai printr-o reversiune spontană. Deoarece acest tip de mutație modifică dramatic structura chimică, consecințele acestei schimbări tind să fie mai drastice decât cele ale tranzițiilor. Acest lucru se datorează faptului că poziția de învârtire a ADN-ului, care în mare măsură este responsabilă de degenerarea codului, este mai tolerantă la tranziție decât la o transversie, astfel încât o mutație de tranziție este mult mai probabil să conducă la același aminoacid care este codificat pentru. Transversiile pot fi cauzate de radiații ionizante și de agenți de alchilare.
