Utilitarismul este o teorie a eticii normative care susține că un curs adecvat de acțiune este cel care maximizează utilitatea, definită de obicei ca maximizarea beneficiului total și reducerea suferinței sau a negativelor. Cele două cele mai influente contribuții ale utilitarismului clasic sunt Jeremy Bentham și Mill John Stuart. Cu cuvinte simple, este modul în care se ajută în arta luării deciziilor. John Stuart Mill, în cartea lui Utilitarism, a spus: "În regula de aur a lui Isus din Nazaret, citim spiritul complet al eticii utilității. Potrivit lui Bentham și Mill, utilitarismul este considerat a fi o abordare hedonistă numai dacă rezultatele unei acțiuni nu provoacă direct un impact negativ asupra altora. În general, acum este considerată o formă de consecințialism, deși atunci când Anscombe a introdus pentru prima dată acest termen, a fost să se facă distincția între "utilitarismul de modă veche" și consecințialismul. În utilitarism, valoarea morală a unei acțiuni este determinată numai de consecințele acesteia.
