Virulenţă
Virulența este, prin definiția MeSH, gradul de patogenitate în cadrul unui grup sau a unei specii de paraziți, așa cum este indicat de rata mortalității cauzelor și / sau de capacitatea organismului de a invada țesuturile gazdei. Patogenitatea unui organism - capacitatea acestuia de a provoca boala - este determinată de factorii de virulență. Virulența substantivului derivă din adjectivul virulent. Virulenta poate descrie fie severitatea bolii, fie infectiozitatea unui patogen. Cuvântul virulent derivă din cuvântul latin virulentus, adică "o rană otrăvită" sau "plină de otrăvire". Într-un context ecologic, virulența poate fi definită ca fiind pierderea de fitness a gazdei provocate de paraziți. Virulența poate fi înțeleasă din punct de vedere al cauzelor apropiate - acele trăsături specifice ale agentului patogen care ajută la transformarea gazdei într-o cauză indispensabilă și supremativă - presiunile evolutive care duc la trăsături virulente care apar într-o tulpină patogenă.
