Literatura, în sensul său cel mai larg, este orice lucrare scrisă; din punct de vedere etimologic, termenul derivă din literatura latină / literatura "scrisă formată cu litere", deși unele definiții includ texte vorbite sau cântate. Mai restrictiv, se scrie că posedă merite literare și limbaj care pune în prim plan literatura, spre deosebire de limbajul obișnuit. Literatura poate fi clasificată după cum este ficțiune sau non-ficțiune și dacă aceasta este poezie sau proză; se poate distinge în continuare în funcție de formele majore, cum ar fi romanul, povestea scurtă sau drama; iar lucrările sunt adesea clasificate în funcție de perioadele istorice sau de respectarea anumitor trăsături sau așteptări estetice. Numit doar lucrări scrise, literatura a fost realizată pentru prima oară de unele dintre cele mai vechi civilizații ale lumii - cele ale Egiptului Antic și Sumeriei - încă din mileniul al IV-lea î.en; luată pentru a include texte vorbite sau spuse, a provenit chiar mai devreme, iar unele dintre primele lucrări scrise s-au putut baza pe o tradiție orală deja existentă. Pe măsură ce s-au dezvoltat culturile și societățile urbane, a existat o proliferare în formele de literatură.
