Golem - în tradiția evreiască, o creatură din lut în formă de om, dar fără un suflet care înțelege nesama și, astfel, capacitatea de a vorbi. Acest cuvânt apare doar o singură dată în Psalmul 135: 15-17, care este tradiția evreiască care se pune pe gura lui Adam. În acest moment este tradus ca un embrion, dar probabil înseamnă ceva fără formă, lipsit de formă. În Evul Mediu, ei au fost identificați cu noțiunea grecească de materie fără formă - η ὕλη. Jako że uważano, iż została ona dokonana za pomocą liter alfabetu hebrajskiego, również przez odpowiednie ich układy próbowano ponowić ten akt. Pierwsze przekazy o golemie utworzonym przez człowieka zawiera Talmud. Później na stałe praktyki te związane były z magicznym wykorzystaniem traktatu Sefer Jecira i odtworzeniem podanej tam struktury boskiej kreacji.
