Totemul este orice obiect, animal sau plantă care este venerat ca un zeu sau echivalent, de o societate organizată în jurul unui simbol sau al unei religii, care se numește totemism. Por definição religiosa podemos afirmar que é uma etiqueta coletiva tribal, que tem um caráter religioso. É em relação a ele que as coisas são classificadas em sagradas ou profanas. Segundo Schoolcraft, analisando os termos dos totens tribais da América do Norte, "o totem, diz ele, é na verdade um desenho que corresponde aos emblemas heráldicos das nações civilizadas e que cada pessoa é autorizada a portar como prova da identidade da família à qual pertence. É o que demonstra a etimologia verdadeira da palavra, derivada de 'dodaim', que significa aldeia ou residência de um grupo familiar".
