Askese (əsɛtɪsɪz (ə) m /; aus dem Griechischen: ἄσκησις áskēsis, "Übung" oder "Training") ist ein Lebensstil, der durch Abstinenz aus weltlichen Freuden gekennzeichnet ist und oft spirituelle Ziele verfolgt. Viele religiöse Traditionen wie Hinduismus, Buddhismus, Jainismus und einige christliche Gruppen (z. B. die Wüstenväter) beinhalten Praktiken, die eine Zurückhaltung in Bezug auf Handlungen von Körper, Sprache und Geist beinhalten. Die Gründer und frühesten Praktizierenden dieser Religionen lebten äußerst strenge Lebensstile, die von sinnlichen Freuden und der Anhäufung von materiellem Reichtum unterlassen wurden.
