Kosaken
Kosaken sind eine Gruppe von überwiegend ostslawischen Menschen, die als Mitglieder der demokratischen, halbmilitärischen Gemeinschaften bekannt waren, die überwiegend in der Ukraine und in Südrussland ansässig waren. Sie bewohnten dünn besiedelte Gebiete und Inseln in den unteren Dnjepr-, Don-, Terek- und Ural-Einzugsgebieten und spielten eine wichtige Rolle in der historischen und kulturellen Entwicklung von Russland und der Ukraine. Die Ursprünge der ersten Kosaken sind umstritten, obwohl die Verfassung von Pylyp Orlyk Khazar Ursprung beanspruchte. Die traditionelle postimperiale Geschichtsschreibung dokumentiert die Entstehung von Kosaken bis zum 14. oder 15. Jahrhundert, als zwei verbundene Gruppen auftauchten, der Saporosche Sich des Dnjepr und der Don Cossack Host. Die Zaporizhian Sich waren ein Vasallen in Polen-Litauen während der Feudalzeit. Unter dem zunehmenden sozialen und religiösen Druck des Commonwealth erklärte der Sich Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts einen unabhängigen Kosaken-Hetmanat, der von einer Rebellion unter Bohdan Khmelnytsky initiiert wurde. Danach brachte der Vertrag von Pereyaslav den größten Teil des ukrainischen Kosakenstaates unter russischer Herrschaft. Der Sich mit seinen Ländern wurde eine autonome Region unter dem russisch-polnischen Protektorat.
