Mit einem großen Sperma können Sie bis zu 2 Tonnen Öl aus dem Spermiumöl erhalten. Spermacet ist eine von vielen Substanzen, die von Walfängern gefangen werden. Andere sind Bernstein, Fischbein, Öl, Fleisch, Knochen.

Z czasem został zastąpiony olejami roślinnymi i syntetycznymi. Obecnie stosowany jest w przemyśle farmaceutycznym. Z dużego kaszalota można uzyskać nawet 2 tony oleju spermacetowego. Spermacet to jedna z wielu substancji pozyskiwanych przez wielorybników. Innymi są ambra, fiszbiny, olej, mięso, kości.
