Senkkasten

A sink box is a box that is recessed as a foundation or as a working space under the water surface. For underwater work, the water is displaced in the caisson, similar to a diving bell with overpressure. Since the middle of the 19th century the process has been used for underwater jobs. The caisson is generally built on land and then towed to the required location on the water and sunk. Frequently, it is necessary to lower the caisson into the ground by a certain amount. In this case, it is used as a working space, which is opened downwards. In order to prevent the surrounding water from penetrating, the cavity is pneumatically placed under a coordinated overpressure. Subsequently, the material of the base can be removed - the lowering box can be lowered further and further. Once the required depth has been reached, the cavity is filled with concrete, usually in the contractor process. In this way, For example a bridge pillar. In the tunnel construction, several caissons are sunk next to each other and are connected to each other in a watertight manner to form a lowering tunnel.
