Candomblé

Candomblé, cult of the orixás, of totemic and familiar origin, is one of the Afro-Brazilian religions practiced mainly in Brazil although it has arrived in neighboring countries like Argentina, Colombia, Panama, Uruguay, Venezuela and even Mexico. Religion is based on the spirit or spirit of nature and therefore is classified as animist. It is presumed that animist priests who were enslaved and transported to Brazil and Spanish colonies transmitted their beliefs and culture to other slaves, who eventually escaped and formed settlements of maroons, also called quilombos along with their orixás / nkisis / voduns, their culture and their Dialects between 1549 and 1888. Despite being originally confined to redoubts and settlements of maroons, banned by the Catholic Church and even criminalized by some governments, candomblé flourished for four centuries and expanded notably after the Golden Law in territories of the Empire of Brazil. Today it is one of the main established religions, with followers of all social classes and tens of thousands of temples.
