In botany, the caryopse is a simple, indehiscent dry fruit whose seed, called "almond", is intimately bonded to the pericarp by its seed coat. The fruits of all the plants of the family grasses or poaceae are caryopses. This fruit is called "grain" in everyday language. We talk about grains of wheat, corn, and so on. In some cases, the glumes, bracts which envelop the naked flower of the grasses, remain adherent to the grain or caryopse. This is referred to as "clothed" grain cereals, for example, barley or wheat starch. In other cases, the glumes are eliminated by threshing and constitute the "bullet", which is then referred to as naked grains, which are much easier to prepare because they can be ground without prior hulling.
