Homotopy is a notion of algebraic topology. It formalizes the notion of continuous deformation from one object to another. Two laces are called homotopes when it is possible to pass continuously from one to the other. This concept is generalized to many other objects than laces. Homotopy provides information about the topological nature of a space. A circular band of a plane can not be equivalent, in the sense of homeomorphism, to a disc. In a disc, all the lace is homotopic to a point. In a circular band, this is not the case. This remark is a source of demonstrations, such as those of D'Alembert-Gauss's theorem, Brouwer's fixed point, Borsuk-Ulam, or the ham sandwich theorem which states, for example, that three measurable solids and finite measurements of the usual space being given, there exists a plane which separates each of the solids into two parts of equal measurements.
