The advance of the Umayyads in Spain restored the military unity of the western kingdoms under the command of Charles Martel, victorious at Poitiers in 732.

L'Occident, ou monde occidental, est un concept géopolitique qui s'appuie généralement sur l'idée d'une civilisation commune, héritière de la civilisation gréco-romaine dont est issue la société occidentale moderne. Son emploi sous-entend également une opposition avec, soit le reste du monde, soit une ou plusieurs autres zones d'influences du monde comme l'Orient, le monde arabe, le monde chinois ou encore la sphère d'influence russe. La notion politique d'Occident apparaît en l'an 285 avec la division de l'Empire romain qui crée progressivement l'Empire romain d'Occident autour de Rome qui utilise l'alphabet latin et l'Empire romain d'Orient autour de Constantinople qui utilise l'alphabet grec. Les invasions barbares entrainent la chute de l'Empire romain d'Occident mais permettent l'extension de l'influence de l'Église catholique romaine à l'Europe du Nord et à l'Europe centrale, tandis que l'Empire romain d'Orient propage la forme orthodoxe du christianisme à l'Europe orientale. L'avancée des Omeyyades en Espagne rétablit l'unité militaire des royaumes occidentaux sous le commandement de Charles Martel, victorieux à Poitiers en 732.
